Judges 8-9 today........ Judges 10-11 tomorrow...

Read it.

I was also reading about Structure for Family.

We hear that a lot of children spend 5-6 hours in front of the television with little or no parental supervision. Such reports reminds us of the NEED to structure our own and our children's time. What elements of structure are important?
1. Sleep
Children and adults both NEED a good night's rest to live healthy and happy lives. Establishing bedtimes and wakeup times is an imortant element of a family's structure. Structure doesn't need to rigid, but it should provide a framework within which all family members operate.
2. Study Time
Children of different aes will have differing amounts of homework. Also, one child will need more or less time than another child to master the same material. As you gain insight into your childen's abilities ad workloads, you can plan with them the amount of time needed for studies. Time should be flexible, it should be part of your children's daily schedule.
3. Play Time
Time to play is important to growing children. What consitutes "play" differs with age. Younger children may ride bikes or play with dolls. For girls in middle school, "play" might be sitting around with friends and talking. For teenage boys "play" is usually hitting the playground with others for basketball or soccer.
4. Chores
ALL children should have some work to do that makes a valuable contribution to the family. Ideally, this work will be done daily as a basic element in the structure of their day. Chores can include picking up their own clothing, making their beds, carrying out the trash, setting the table, helping to cook the meals or cleaning the kitchen after supper.
5. Family Time
Be sure to include in your structure some time when the entire family is together, at meal time for instance. Also, build in some private time for each child with Dad or Mom. Take a walk or drive to the ice-cream shop or prepare the evening meal together with one child. Spend the time together talking. Also, be sure to use natural times together, like riding somewhere in the car, to draw you child into conversations.
6. Phone and Television Time
When structuring the day, parents will probably have to sent limits on certains activities such as TV watching. Research shows that the physical and mental well-being af American children has been drastically affected by television. It is completely appropriate to set a limit on the number of hours your children may watch TV.
Use of phone will often need supervision also. As children move into adolescense, social relationships become increasingly important. And unless phone time is limited, literally hours each day may be spent chattering with friends to the exclusion of homework, chores and family time.
NOTE: Structure is not Restricting
Structure should never be rigid or inflexible. There shoudl be room for a child to stay overnight with a friend or for a teen to reschedule or skip study time now and then to go off with a friend.
Structure can prove difficult beccause it means that we as parents have to live within that structure ourselves. Sometimes when we're tired we'll have to make a special efforet to help a child with a task. Or perhaps we'll have to change a work schedule in order to keep an ice-cream date. But in a very real sense good parenting is always sacrificial. We give up thins we'd like to do for the sake of our children. And in the end, we're almost always glad we did.

Quote by Unknown
It's not easy to establish a healthy structure for the family, but an absence of structure in the home leads to boredom and even to undisciplined and unprofitable behavior.

Have a great night,

  2. Chapter 8: verse 1... nobody likes to be left out... makes me think about how sometimes we jump to conclusions and assume that other people do not want to help us, when in reality, they really do care and want to be apart of what is going on in our lives... sometimes accepting help can be harder than giving it... but we have to remember the joy we get in giving help, and not be selfish by denying someone else the joy of giving help, even if that means accepting their help ourselves.
verse 2-3... basic lesson in diplomacy
vers 4... I love how it says that they were 'exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit'... how often do we get 'too tired' to do what God asks us to do... yet, when we rely on God to be our strength, He will sustain us no matter how exhausted we feel (body, mind, or spirit)
verse 5-6, 8... how rude... reminds me of how we sometimes think 'well it doesnt affect us so why should we bother?'... but it does affect us whenever it affects someone loved by God (who does God love? see John 3:16)... besides, wouldn't we want someone to help us if the shoe was on the other foot? (see Matthew 7:12)
verse 7, 9, 14-21... two wrongs don't make a right though?... what about forgiveness and turning the other cheek?
vers 10... God can do amazing things, far beyond what we can conceive or comprehend (see Ephesians 3:20-21)
verse 20... why did he tell his son to kill them? was he training him for battle? was he too scared to do it himself? why???
verse 21... 'As is the man, so is his strength'... is this a saying from the time?... I don't completely agree with it though, because Gideon's strength was from God, but God is not vengeful, as Gideon seemed to be?
verse 23... Gideon got this part right
verse 27... but not this part... just going on a guess here, but the priests also had ephods on their garments... maybe Gideon made a large version of whatever this 'ephod' was, and since the priests used it in conjunction with their connection with God, Gideon thought that this recreation of the 'thing' would help him get into closer connection with God, too... regardless, it is clear that the ephod here was an idol of some sort... I don't think Gideon meant it to be when he started out, because he seemed to want the people to look to God for guidance, and the text says they didn't worship 'other' gods until Gideon was dead, etc (see veres 23, 33-34), however, what appears to have maybe happened here, as does in our own lives, sometimes, what was meant to be a reminder to worship God, becomes a worshipped thing itself... for example, if we are too focused on the idea or time required in Bible study, instead of on learning about God, we can turn Bible study into an idol; or if we are too focused on the type of music we sing on Sunday morning, or how the lights and videos look, instead of focusing on lifting our praise to God, then we can turn Sunday worship into an idol... of course there are also the easy ones like money, security, family, good works, etc... anything can become an idol because an idol is anything we put before or in place of God.... so, we must use caution and constantly be checking ourselves to make sure that the things we do to worship God and the good intentions we have behind the things we do, do not turn into idols themselves... for if they do, they will be a snare to us, and our those around us.

  3. verse 28... interesting that even though Gideon did not rule over the Isrealites, his influence was enough to keep the land at peace until his death?
veres 29... I think it is interesting how sometimes the writer uses 'Gideon' and sometimes he uses 'Jerub-Baal'... I wonder if there is any significance for this differentition of name usages?
vers 31... never a good thing when a man has a concubine or multiple wives... remember Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar?... what about Jacob, and his many wives, and many half-siblings?
verse 33-35... how fickle, and how quick to forget, we humans can be... if anyone says there are no miracles today, I would have to suggest that there is at least one on-going miracle, and that is that God does not just choose to get rid of us all, as rebellious we are at all times

  4. Chapter 9: vers 1-2... intersting campaign speech
vesre 3... not necessarily a good idea to mix personal with business
verse 4... ok, the fact that they were given the title 'reckless adventurers' has to tell you something about their character right off the bat... I don't think I would want to follow a government that was run by 'reckless adventurers'... current political commentary and opinions withheld. :)
vesr 5... not exactly sure what it means to kill them all on one stone, but regardless, how crazy is that! I know that there are sibling rivelries and stuff, but come on... we've gone from the killing of one brother (Cain and Abel), and now the sin and evil has spread to 70... wow, sin is like a weed... and not the pretty kind!
vesre 7-15... not sure what this all means, but it seems like the idea of taking refuge under a thornbush or having fire consume you is kind of like looking for the best of the two evils... the thornbush seems like it must be a trick or something... having flash backs of Senior English Literature right now where we had to read some great peice of writing and figure out what it meant and why it was so great... hoping to get some 'ah-ha' insight from one of you. :)
    verse 17... adding guilt/shame?
vesre 16-20... got that Abimelech was the thornbush... kind of a curse regardless of how the people respond becuase they have already acted without honor so they can't do anything now to redeem themselves
verse 23-24... what is this all about? I get that it is about avenging the deaths and all, but why would God 'send an evil spirit'? I realize that EVERYTHING is under God's control, but still?... some other translations make this seem more like the idea of trouble or 'bad blood' coming between the two... like they found a reason to dislike each other... makes me wonder if all dislike comes from evil spirits? ok, now I'm starting to go down a road I have no knowledge in, so... turning around and moving on...
verse 25... how does taking out their aggressions and frustrations on innocent travelers fix their issues with Abimelech?... makes me think about how we can sometimes skirt the issue at hand and instead of working things out with the real person (or whatever) we are angry with, we take out our frustrations on those closest to us, like by snapping at our husband or yelling at our kids or whatever... not a nice thing to do, especially when we 'ambush' them over something they didn't have anything to do with... maybe they could be our 'allies' if we let them, instead of attacking them, anyway, too?
    verse 26... there's a new sherriff in town. :)
vers 27-29... interesting that this whole conversation came about while they were drinking... hmmmm... maybe we shouldn't set our mouths to running when we aren't thinking clearly ... it might be wise to wait until our brains can back up what we are saying?
verse 36-38... still under the influence?... just getting some mental images and smiling at this scene. :)
vers 39-45... we must be careful who we side with... glad we who are in Christ are on the victorious side (see 1 Corinthians 15:57)... what is up with the scattering of salt all over the city (in verse 45) though?
verse 46-49... the people went into the stronghold of their god (berith), but their god was not able to keep them safe, because he is not a real god, like our God... our God IS a strong tower and a place of refuge for those who run to Him (see Proverbs 18:10, Psalm 9:9, Psalm 46:1)
vesre 50... why did he go there?
    verse 53... bad news! ow!

  5. vesre 54... first off, I'm amazed that he could still talk... second, his plan didn't work because the people still remember that he was killed by a woman (see 2 Samuel 11:21)... makes me think about how when we mess up, people remember those things... they don't always remember how we tried (or did) fix it... not fair, but maybe a reality we should be wise about, so we guard our actions and are cautious before we proceed.
verse 55... it kills me how wishy-washy the peopel were... they were willing to go to battle not because it was in their heart (or they wouldn't have given up so easily), but becuase they wanted adventure or something?... on the positive side (maybe), it shows what an effective leader can do in uniting and exciting people to a common cause.
verese 56-57... reminder that no matter what happens, good or bad, it all is under the authority and control of God... we don't always have an answer for why bad things are allowed to happen, but I got an e-mail the other day that I really liked as an explanation, and I'm going to post it here, as well:
    "God's Cake"
This is about the best thing I've ever read as an explanation. We all wonder many many many times over WHY? Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did God have to do this to me?" Here is a wonderful explanation! A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her
boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away. Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake." "Here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter. "How about a couple raw eggs?" "Gross, Mom!" "Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Mom, those are all yucky!" To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!" God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful! God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart."

    Much Love,

  6. Oh, one other thing that I just thought of in regards to Gideon... remember back in Chapter 6 when God calls scared little Gideon 'mighty warrior'... it was amusing then, but in light of these past chapters of Gideon's battles, it is very true... in hindsight we can always see how God has worked in our lives... yet, maybe we shouldn't laugh or doubt when God gives us insight into His plans into our lives... He sees us for who He made us to be... we see ourselves for what we are right now... which vision should be rely on?... just something to think about... goodnight. :)
