  1. Chapter 23: verse 1... ow!
    verse 2... wow
verse 3-6... so no forgiveness here? why?... study notes make a mention that this law might have caused some problems for David because his great-grandmother, Ruth, was a Moabite.
verse 5...'the Lord turned the curse into a blessing for you because the Lord your God loves you.'... thank you God!... we can trust Him to fight our battles for us... even the ones we don't know about.
    verse 7-8... interesting
verse 12-14... :) ... might be the funniest verses in the Bible... reminds me of how we have to go potty in the country in SE Asia... God doesn't want to step on the poop. :) ... ok, time to go back to being a grown up now. :)
verse 15-16... I wonder if these are some of the verses used by the Underground Railroad 'conductors' who helped the slaves get free... by law then, they were supposed to turn the people in, but here, in God's law (which trumps civil/people law), it says not to turn them in.
verse 21-23... if we bargain with God, or tell Him we will do something, we had better hold up our end of the deal... if we don't want to be held to what we said we'd do, then we'd better not say anything.... powerful verses... how often do we say we'll change and be better, or whatever, if God will just rescue us from some 'disaster'? how often do we forget we said this as soon as He does rescue us? what does God say about how He feels about that, here?
verse 24-25... interesting... my first thought was how people eat grapes at the grocery store... still a sin I think, because it is stealing, but I find this verse interesting... although I think here it is in conjunction with leaving your leftovers for those less fortunate, so the poor has food, too... but at the same time, God doesn't want the poor to take advantage of the good nature of the field owner by 'plundering' them or doing their 'grocery shopping' or harvest in the field... if we implemented this rule in the US today, how would it change the way welfare worked? how would it change the way people interacted with each other and about the 'welfare' system?

  2. Chapter 24: verse 1... so divorce is permitted for indecent behavior?... like what?... some clarification can be found in Matthew 5:31-32, and Matthew 19:3-9.
verse 3... ok, if I were her, I would start to develop a complex! :)
verse 5... great law! I wish we still had this one in effect today... I really like the part about 'bring happiness to the wife he has married' :)
verse 6... makes sense... how can they repay the debt if you take their source of income?... kind of reminds me of the parable where the king throws the man in jail and he can't get out until he has paid back all he has owed... always made me wonder how he would be able to pay it back if he was locked up in jail and tortured instead of able to work to earn money to pay his debt back (Matthew 18:21-35)... kind of a 'lifetime' sentence without stating that way... although that is part of the point, in that we can not ever pay back all we owe to God for our debt of sin... not even our relatives (if it was even allowed) could pay our way out of Hell... and even if they could, it wouldn't be worth it because we would have undergone such immense torture in the meantime, we would just be wishing to die... better to just accept God's gift of Salvation, I think... anyway, this law seems like a common sense one... I like those kinds. :)
    verse 9... see Numbers 12:9-15
verse 10-11... be respectful... don't be a bully or act 'superior'
verse 12-15... be kind to the poor
verse 16... if God doesn't blame others for our sins, then neither should we... it's not our parent's fault for the choices we make, even if we don't agree with how they raised us.
    verse 19-22... see Chapter 23, verse 24-25

  3. study notes say to see Leviticus 19:9-10 and Ruth 2 for more on 'gleaning'

Chapter 25: verse 3... why would it degrade him more at 41 than it would at 39 or whatever?... is this a kin to parents spanking their kids out of anger verses disciplining (even with a spank) out of love?
verse 4...see 1 Corinthians 9:1-14 for a more personal interpretation.
verse 5-10... what if the woman doesn't want to marry the man?... seems kind of funny to have your name the 'Family of the Unsandled', but as we've seen already, it is really important for the Isrealites to keep their geneology and family lines in tact and in order... so to have that taken away would be a big deal.... see more clarification in Ruth 4:1-12.
    verse 11-12... wow!
verse 13-16... we know some people who have been able to bring people to Jesus because they literally had truthful scales instead of the 'lying' scales of everyone else around them.... not only did it bring them more business, but it also helped them win many people to Christ... God doesn't mess around when He gives these laws... we have to remember that they are all for His utmost glory... our blessing from them is secondary.
